Policy & Regulations of the Institute


Cycles of Studies

The basic training period at Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Epirus is the teaching semester. Each academic year, which begins on September 1st and ends on July 5th, consists of two separate semesters: the winter semester, which begins the first Monday after the September exams and the week of enrollments and, the spring semester, which begins after the exams of the 2nd period of the winter semester and the week of enrollments.

 

Organization of Studies

Undergraduate studies in Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) are based on semesters and each academic year consists of two semesters: winter and spring. The study programmes consist of: -

 

  • Core Modules (CM)
  • Specific Modules (SM)
  • Specialization Modules (SM)
  • Modules of Management, Finance & Accounting, Legislation and Humanities
  • Optional Modules, (OM) (which provide general education)

 

When modules of a group are inter-connected, this group is named group of prerequisite modules.These groups differ in each Department and students should get all the appropriate information about them in the special departmental study guides. A student must pass the prerequisite modules of the corresponding groups, one by one, successfully.

 

Attendance

Students attend all courses defined during their enrollment. The teaching hours for each subject are announced on the Departmental timetable. During the semester the minimum number of students who must be present in a lesson so as to take place is 30% of the students registered to attend the course.

Course modules can have either a theoretical or a laboratory part, or both. Participation in tutorials is compulsory and checked by the teacher. Students are required to attend at least 80% of the tutorials in order to be entitled to participate in the exams at the end of the semester.

 

Exams

After the completion of the 15-week teaching period, all students have to sit final exams in each course. The time allowed for each course examination must not exceed three hours. The responsibility for carrying out the course examination lies with the person who has taught the course. A student, in order to successfully complete a course has to get at least a grade 5 in the grading scale 0-10. If a student fails at a course examination in the first examination period, he/she can take an examination of the same course during the second period. For the tutorial courses, a final written exam is not obligatory. The final grade is given either by the final exam itself, by continuous lab tests and essays which take place throughout the semester or by a combination of them. When the course consists of a lecture and tutorials work, the student must obtain a grade of 5 for both lecture and laboratory work.

 

Institutional Grading System

Marking range is between 0 -10. An average of five is adequate for obtaining a degree.

From 7 to 8, 4 = Very good

From 6 to 6, 9 = Good

From 5 to 5, 9 = Poor

5 is the lowest passing mark A Grade below 5 means the student has failed and must be examined again, or repeat the course.

Dissertation

All students need to undertake a Degree Project on a specialized topic in the chosen area of their studies, during the 7th and 8th semester, under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff of the Department. During the last semester of studies, each student has to present and defend his/her Degree Project to a three-member committee of the teaching staff. The Project is considered successfully completed, when the student receives a grade of 5 or above for the project.

 

Work Placement-Erasmus Placements

  • Overview

Job placement, that is, apprenticeship in a work place, is considered an essential part of the Technological Educational Institution (T.E.I.) students' studies. Trainees are supervised and evaluated and their training session lasts six months. Students' placements are available either in the Public or in the Private Sector. The procedure and the public bodies involved are subjected to relevant laws and Presidential decrees.

  • Requirements / Procedure

Students are entitled to a training placement when they:

  • attend the last semester of their course (8th semester), and
  • have successfully taken exams in a required number of taught subjects (as specified in the curriculum/syllabus)

In case the above requirements are met, the students are entitled to submit their application to the Secretariat Office of their Department.

Placement documents should include information about:

 

  • the employer's name
  • the company/service name
  • the company/service address
  • the training starting date

 

After the company/service has confirmed the placement, students are given three copies of a placement contract prepared by the Career Office and signed by the Head of the Department, the company/service manager and themselves.

  • Payment

Students trained in Public services are paid 176 Euros per month, whereas in private companies they are entitled to 80% of the salary of an unskilled worker, according to the National Labour Contract. The Greek Manpower Employment Organization subsidizes employers (including Local Authorities Services, the Public Power Corporation, the Telecommunications Company and Banks) with 50% of the trainee salary. Salaries are not subjected to tax or charges.

  • Insurance

Trainees are insured only against job risks.

Premiums come to 1% of the presumptive salary (12th order).

Employers should be regularly informed about insurance by the relevant Social Insurance Service.

Apart from salaries and insurance, trainees are not entitled to any extra benefits or pension schemes.

  • Responsibilities

Trainees have to comply with working hours, work and safety rules, as well as any other regulations, set by the company/service.

They are also entitled to only a five day leave of absence (totally). Leaves have to be entered in the training booklet.

  • Work placement abroad/Era-placements

Students of the Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Epirus can move to other countries of the European Union for their work placement through a consortium in which the Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Epirus is a partner. The ERA-Places Action allocates grants to students who wish to work abroad. The amount of the money changes according to the cost of living in each country. Graduation

Graduate of the Institute becomes the student who has successfully completed the required conditions:

  • Has attended successfully all the compulsory, compulsory electives and any optional courses, and has gathered a total of 240 ECTS (Credit Units).
  • Has successfully passed the examination on the degree project.
  • Has completed the work placement.
